Through the Grass: Discover the Hidden Beauty of the Ibis

Glossy Ibis in The Bahamas

A Glossy Ibis perched on a weathered rock wall. At first glance, it might seem like an ordinary scene of another bird chilling in The Bahamas, but the truth of this image lies in the choice of perspective.

Before capturing this shot, I spent some time observing the Ibis. It surveyed its world, and I searched for a way to capture more than just its silhouette. I laid down in the grass, pressed into the earth, and aimed through the blades. The foreground blurred into a wash of green, framing the bird in a way that felt elevated, almost regal.

That’s what I love about this photograph: the transformation of the familiar. The glossy ibis is a bird I’ve seen countless times, but here, in the Bahamian sunlight, its feathers reveal hidden hues of greens, maroons, and even a shimmer of gold. Along its neck and head, faint stripes are visible, patterns that might be overlooked from another vantage point.

From a higher angle, the wall is a barrier, holding back the pond just out of frame, but from my angle, it becomes a stage where the ibis stands above it all, claiming its perspective, its presence. This capture invites you to do the same: to shift your view, to humble yourself and look through the grass, to find beauty in what we thought we already knew.

There’s a grounding energy in this piece. The greens of the grass and background, the earthy tones of the wall, the ibis as the focal point—it all comes together to create a sense of calm awareness. I imagine it hanging in a space, bringing that same natural stillness indoors, a reminder to pause and notice.

For me, this image is about vantage points. The ibis looks out for its next meal, scanning the world from above. We, in turn, look up at it, almost from the perspective of the insects it hunts. Two worlds intersecting in a single frame, each defined by where we stand.

Even the most common things can become extraordinary when we choose to see them differently. That’s the story of this photograph. This print would serve as a great reminder to change the beauty we see by changing our perspective.
